Rudi Ottery Papers, 1604-1991 (bulk: 1800-1988).

Consists of records on the Brotherton Indian tribe including tribal rolls, censuses, descendancies from Brotherton progenitors, and enrollment files collected from individuals of Brotherton descent wishing to be placed on the Brotherton Indian rolls (as part of a larger effort to petition the federal government for formal recognition as an Indian tribe). The enrollment files include supporting documentation such as notes, family group sheets, correspondence, vital records, newspaper articles, land records and some photographs. The collection contains historical records consisting of photocopies of treaties, deeds, government reports, powers of attorney, letters and other documents primarily concerning the tribes land dealings as well as applications made by New York Indians (Oneida, Stockbridge, Brotherton) and their descendants for compensation from the federal government for the Kansas lands which were promised in the treaty of Buffalo Creek, N.Y., January 15, 1838. Includes resource material consulted by Rudi Ottery in preparation of her book "A Man Named Sampson."
